Dunno if the -isync is needed, but make sure you copy both codecs or it will create suckage. Thanks to this for demonstrating the proper command line order.

I did a fresh install of Kubuntu 9.04 on a Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop. It was really great except for one niggling problem. Ctrl-Backtab no longer walks me through the desktop list in reverse. There’s a bug in KDE 4.2[whatever] that breaks that. The answer is to upgrade to KDE 4.3 of course. Sad thing is, doing that is unsupported in my current version of Kubuntu. I can either upgrade KDE to a version unsupported by Jaunty, upgrade to Kantic, which is currently in beta state, or wait until October when Kantic comes out to get my fricking ctr-backtab back!

Or I can install gnome.

I’m gonna give KDE one last chance before switching to gnome.

The radishes didn’t “bolt” as I was perceiving it. Rather they grew straight up and shot out a bunch of very tasty pods. We pick about 10 a day and there are more than we can eat. They’re a little acidic so are best with food.

The spearmint on the other hand is going nuts. So far we can just about keep up by puting a few dozen leaves in our tea every day. Tastes great. The plan is to dry a bunch for tea over the winter.

The cantaloupe is producing like mad. We probably have a dozen ripening on top of tin-cans cut in half right now. Getting ready to be sick of cantaloupe by September.

That tomato plant is amazing. There are 9 tomatoes on there right now in various stages of growth. I need to stake it up, as it’s about 4′ tall.

The cilantro is sparse, but tasty. I had some in a stirfry last night and it was very good.

The chives are a sad minority. They live, but they probably decry the pointlessness of their existence.

The beans are starting to produce! I need so go read how to tell when to pick them, and what the hellto do with them after that.

I totally hosed planting the potatoes. Never knew that you cut them up around the eye and plant them. I just threw the whole potato in the ground. They are shooting up, but we’ll see what’s down below after they flower.

All in all the kale and the radish pods have proven the most useful so far. If I did it again I’d plant one row less of Kale and 1 row more of beans like Sonoran Gold or Mitla Black Beans to get some more protein in the garden. Sure is fun though.

KDE finds it. That scares me more than anything in light of how it behaves generally. It looks like I have the hpijs drivers installed along with various PPD files. We’ll see if we actually have it right by printing something from the gimp.

Options come up in the gimp. Photo doesn’t really fit 4×6 paper so I resized and hit print, making sure to pull from the photo cartridge. Result is “Paper Mismatch.”

Ooh it’s printing. It’s using “auto-sense” to automatically jack with my picture.

Installed gutenprint. That was a dead end. It printed into the ether.

Went back to the KDE print control panel and found a way to choose a paper size of 4×6 and the photo paper. Also I confirmed that it pulls printer descriptions from gutenprint, as a printer description I had made in gutenprint was there.

I’m going to go back to the hpijs route. That seems to make more sense. I ran one of the hp command line scriptsand lo it printed a test page.

So here’s my thing. I don’t know what hplip is. I thought it was an actual interface to drivers but maybe it ain’t.

I’m considering installing the latest version of hplip just to see what there is to see.

Hm just found hp-toolbox. Media is set to “Phot or 4×6 inch index card.” Printout mode is Photo, etc. So the printer sees all it should see. This could just be the case that, oh I don’t know, GIMP SUCKS!!!?!?!

I’m gonna print with gwenview.

Set all margins to 0.

Chose portrait mode.

Page size is 4×6 and width + height (grayed out) are 4.00 in and 6.00 in.

Under the Image Settings tab, the Scaling header I have “Fit image to page.” Here we go.

Huh wordpress just lost the last bit I had about some weird HP auto-sensor going on there. Oohhh I can see the paper edging out of the printer …

oooh boy so far it looks really. really. good.

The Kale

Our Kale is too old to eat but the butterflies like it. I should go out and trim it up so that we can still collect the new shoots.

Radishes

Our radishes are going nuts. I want them to bolt and help serve as a living mulch of sorts but they are growing vertically instead. They still look pretty cool.

Cantaloupe

We have a half-dozen cantaloupe (muskmellon) vines that are growing very well and one that isn’t growing too well. I’m going to see how that latter one does. I also didn’t cull one of two that are growing too close together. I’m interested to see what happens. Will they fight? Who will win? Will it be to the death? Only time can tell.

Mint

We planted 4 spearmint plants that I really hope go crazy so that at least when we’re cutting a bunch of green crap it will smell nice and make a nice tea.

Cilantro

We have some cilantro sprouts coming up. I plan to pull the radishes as the cilantro take over.

Chives

Our chives look like the beard of a 13 year old.

Beans

We have some beans that should come out purple and then turn green when we boil them.

Potatoes

We have some potatoes that were growing wild in the kitchen cabinet. I buried them. We’ll see what happens.
